For most travellers, take the JR Limited Express Hida (特急ひだ) from Nagoya Station: JR Central gives the trip as about 2 hours and 20 minutes, though times vary by train,[1] and the Japan Rail Pass covers it.[8] Take the highway bus only if you have booked a fixed seat and a bus time suits you better, because every seat on it must be reserved.[10] If you are still deciding what to do once you arrive, the Takayama guide covers the old town, the Jinya and how long to stay.

The train is the simpler choice for a first trip: if your plans move, you are not tied to the one counter where you bought a bus ticket. The bus suits you if you are staying near the Meitetsu Bus Center, or if you prefer a fixed reserved seat booked weeks ahead.

How do I ride the Hida from Nagoya?

  1. Get two tickets, or one ticketless booking

The Hida needs a basic fare ticket and a limited express ticket.[4],[5] Buy both at a JR ticket machine or counter at Nagoya Station, or book JR Central’s ticketless limited express ticket on JR West’s e5489 site: an adult ordinary reserved seat from Nagoya to Takayama costs 2,730 yen in the regular season, with the basic fare paid separately.[4]

  2. Pay the basic fare with TOICA if you have one

JR Central announced in July 2025 that from October 1, 2025, TOICA would be accepted at Gero, Takayama and Hida-Furukawa for passengers riding the Hida,[5] so a ticketless limited express booking plus a TOICA card lets you board without collecting paper tickets.

  3. Board at Nagoya

In the timetable shown for October 23, 2026, the first Hida leaves Nagoya at 07:43 and arrives in Takayama at 10:16.[2] The last leaves at 20:17 and arrives at 22:49.[2] Times can differ by day, so check your date when you book.

  4. Arrive at JR Takayama Station

Takayama Nohi Bus Center, where the highway buses arrive, is by JR Takayama Station,[9] and the buses to Shirakawa-go leave from it.[7] If you go on to Shirakawa-go with bags, the Shirakawa-go luggage guide covers lockers and bus reservations.

Going back, the last train to Nagoya that runs every day leaves Takayama at 18:48 and reaches Nagoya at 21:03.[3] Times can differ by date, so check the timetable for your day. If that is too early, stay the night: where to stay in Takayama compares the station area, the old town and the onsen villages.

If you arrive in Nagoya by Shinkansen from Tokyo, the Tokyo–Kyoto Shinkansen guide explains the Tokaido Shinkansen tickets that get you to Nagoya.

How do I book the highway bus to Takayama?

The Takayama-Nagoya Line runs from JR Nagoya Station and the Meitetsu Bus Center via Gujo-Hachiman to Takayama Nohi Bus Center, next to JR Takayama Station.[9] Every bus is reservation-only, with reserved seats only,[10] so you cannot just turn up and board.

Before you book, know how changes work: to change or cancel, you must go to the counter where you bought the ticket before the bus leaves. Once it has left, the ticket is invalid and cannot be refunded.[9]

Large suitcases go in the underfloor trunk, which many passengers share, and large items may be refused when space runs out.[9],[10] If you travel with two big cases, the train is the safer choice.

Which pass covers the trip, and is there a cheaper round trip?

Japan Rail Pass. The JR Pass is valid on JR limited express trains,[8] so it covers the Hida. It does not cover the highway bus: the pass covers most JR Bus local lines but is not valid on express bus routes, even those run by JR Bus.[8] Whether the pass pays off depends on your whole route, which our Japan Rail Pass review works out.

Hida Area Free Ticket (JR Central). For a simple round trip from Nagoya, this ticket costs 12,370 yen[6] and is valid for 3 days.[6] It includes reserved seats on the Hida in both directions, and between Hida-Kanayama and Hida-Furukawa you can hop on and off limited express, rapid and local trains in the non-reserved ordinary seats. It is sold only when a reserved seat on your outbound Hida is available.[6] The bus course adds a Nohi Bus voucher for a round-trip Shirakawa-go bus (not the buses that need a reservation) or the Takayama & Shin-Hotaka free ticket.[6] The catch: it cannot be used from April 27 to May 6, from August 10 to August 19 or from December 28 to January 6, and there is no child version.[6]

Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass (JR Central). If you continue from Takayama to Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa or Toyama, this pass costs ¥19,800 for adults and ¥9,900 for children aged 6 to 11.[7] It is valid for 5 consecutive days.[7] Reserved seats on JR limited express trains and the Hokuriku Shinkansen are free up to 6 times,[7] and it covers the buses from Takayama Nohi Bus Center to Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa or Toyama, with reservations required.[7] For Nagoya and back only, the Hida Area Free Ticket costs less. The full Takayama-Hokuriku pass review works out when it pays off on a one-way trip.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I take a large suitcase on the bus?

It goes in the shared underfloor trunk, and large items may be refused when space is short.[9],[10] On the Hida train, your luggage travels with you.

Does an IC card work on the Hida?

Partly. JR Central announced that TOICA would be accepted at Takayama for passengers riding the Hida from October 1, 2025,[5] but you still need a limited express ticket, such as the ticketless one booked on e5489.[4],[5]

Can I go on to Shirakawa-go the same day?

Yes, if you arrive in the morning. The first Hida reaches Takayama at 10:16,[2] and the Shirakawa-go buses leave from Takayama Nohi Bus Center.[7] The Hida Area Free Ticket’s bus course includes a round-trip Shirakawa-go bus voucher.[6]

Does the Japan Rail Pass cover the Nagoya–Takayama bus?

No. The pass is not valid on express bus routes, even those run by JR Bus.[8] It does cover the Hida.[8]
