Chugoku travel guide

Chugoku stretches from the Seto Inland Sea coast around Hiroshima to the San'in side, with Matsue, Izumo and Tottori. Before you plan, work out which side you want to see, whether you base yourself in a city or on an island, and how the rail passes and ferries fit your route.

On the Hiroshima side, start with the Peace Memorial Museum and its ticket rules, then the routes from Hiroshima to Miyajima and whether to sleep in the city or on the island. If you are coming from Kansai, the Hiroshima day trip guide checks whether an area pass beats separate tickets.

For San'in, the Matsue and Izumo guide covers the castle, the shrine and how many days to give them, and the rail pass comparison sorts out which JR West pass still pays. This page also lists guides to the Tottori dunes, Okunoshima, the Adachi Museum of Art, Kamiari-sai and more.
