Yes. You can stop at Shirakawa-go (白川郷) with a suitcase between Kanazawa and Takayama, but you need a separate ticket for each leg, because a through ticket does not let you get off and reboard.[1] Leave the suitcase in a coin locker at Shirakawago Bus Terminal or at the storage service next to it, and collect it before both close at 17:00.[5]

Key facts

  • Kanazawa → Shirakawa-go: ¥2,800 one way for rides through November 30, 2026, ¥2,900 from December 1, 2026.[1],[2],[3]
  • Shirakawa-go → Takayama: ¥2,800, or ¥2,900 from December 1, 2026; about 50 minutes.[2],[3] [2]
  • Booking: every bus to and from Kanazawa is reserved-seat only,[1] and sales open one month ahead.[1]
  • Lockers at the terminal: ¥500 small or medium, ¥1,000 large, per use.[5]
  • Lockers and storage close at 17:00.[5]
  • Time to allow in the village: roughly 2–3 hours.[5]

Which buses give me time in the village?

Take a morning bus from Kanazawa and a mid-afternoon bus on to Takayama. That gives the village the 2–3 hours the tourist association suggests[5] and gets your bag out of the locker well before 17:00.[5] The Shirakawa-go guide covers what to see in those hours.

Buses leave Kanazawa Station West Exit at 8:10, 8:40, 9:10, 9:40, 11:10, 13:00, 13:20, 14:00 and 16:00.[1],[4] Onward buses to Takayama leave Shirakawa-go (Ogimachi) at 6:43, 9:35, 10:05, 10:30, 10:55, 11:10, 11:40, 12:35, 13:15, 13:30, 14:00, 14:45, 15:15, 15:45, 16:15, 16:35, 17:25 and 17:30.[2],[4] The table pairs them for a stop of about three hours.

Some buses run all the way from Kanazawa to Takayama: the 8:10, 11:10, 13:20 and 16:00. The 8:40, 9:10, 9:40, 13:00 and 14:00 end at Shirakawa-go.[1] For a stop, this makes no difference: you get off either way and board a later bus on a new ticket.[1] What to see once you reach Takayama, and where to leave bags there, is in the Takayama guide.

How do I book the two legs?

Treat the trip as two separate journeys and book both before you leave Kanazawa.

  1. Book Kanazawa → Shirakawa-go10 min

Seats go on sale on the same date one month before you travel.[1] Nohi Bus, which runs the line with Hokuriku Railroad, sends online bookings for reserved-seat services to Japan Bus Online.[2]

  2. Book Shirakawa-go → Takayama10 min

If your onward bus is marked reservation-only, reserve it the same way, as a separate booking from Shirakawa-go.[1] For a non-reserved Nohi Bus, you can buy a mobile ticket instead; Nohi Bus sells mobile tickets for non-reserved buses only.[2]

  3. Check the price of two tickets1 min

Two tickets cost ¥5,600 for rides through November 30, 2026 and ¥5,800 from December 1, 2026. That is ¥1,400 more than the through fare in both periods.[1],[2],[3] The through fare from Kanazawa to Takayama is ¥4,200, or ¥4,400 from December 1, 2026, but it does not allow a stop.[2],[3]

  4. Store the bag, then walk the village2–3 h

Go straight to the lockers at Shirakawago Bus Terminal when you arrive, since they are where the buses stop.[5] Be back at the terminal before 17:00.[5]

The full booking process from the Kanazawa side, with the phone line and the auto-cancel deadline, is in the Shirakawa-go day trip guide.

Where do I leave my suitcase in Shirakawa-go?

At the bus terminal. The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association lists coin lockers at Shirakawago Bus Terminal, available from 8:00 to 17:00, and a luggage storage service next to the terminal, open until 17:00.[5] The lockers cost ¥500 per box for the small and medium sizes and ¥1,000 for the large size, per use.[5]

The association does not publish how many lockers there are or the inside dimensions of the large size. If your case does not fit, use the storage service next door instead. Keep the last pick-up time in mind: with the 17:25 or 17:30 bus to Takayama,[2],[4] you must collect the bag before 17:00 and wait with it.[5]

Can I take a large suitcase on the bus?

Usually yes, but space is not guaranteed. On Hokuriku Railroad buses, luggage goes on the overhead rack or in the trunk under the floor. You load and unload the trunk yourself, and long items such as skis, snowboards and large instruments are refused.[1]

Nohi Bus, which runs most buses on the Takayama leg, has a shared trunk with limited space, so it may not take large items. You handle your own luggage, and mobile batteries must stay with you in the cabin.[2] With one large case per person this works on most days; with several, forwarding is simpler.

Should I forward the suitcase to Takayama instead?

Forward it if you carry more than one large case, if you travel in winter, or if you want to arrive in the village with free hands. Yamato Transport (TA-Q-BIN) measures a parcel by the total of its width, length and height: Size 120 is up to 120 cm and 15 kg, Size 140 up to 140 cm and 20 kg, and Size 160 up to 160 cm and 25 kg.[7]

From Ishikawa to Gifu, Yamato’s cash rate is ¥2,040 for Size 120, ¥2,630 for Size 140 and ¥3,020 for Size 160, with ¥100 off if you drop the bag off yourself at a Yamato office, agency or convenience store.[8] Hand it to your Kanazawa hotel’s front desk and ask when it will reach your Takayama hotel. Yamato’s delivery-date checker is in Japanese only. A step-by-step guide to forwarding luggage is not on this site yet.

When does the plan go wrong?

Snow and parking queues. Nohi Bus warns that delays of two hours or more can happen because of queues for car parking at the village, heavy snowfall or expressway closures.[2] A late bus can push you past the 17:00 locker deadline,[5] so take an early pair in winter and on busy autumn weekends.

Light-Up days. On January 11, January 17, January 24 and January 31, 2027, the Light-Up event is by advance reservation only. An entrance gate goes up at 15:30, and if you arrive by regular bus, your bus must reach the village by 15:20.[6] All four morning pairs in the table arrive well before that.[1],[2],[4]

The December 1 fare change. Both legs rise by ¥100 for rides from December 1, 2026.[1],[2],[3] [2],[3] Check the fare for your travel date when you book.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do it in the reverse direction, Takayama to Kanazawa?

Yes, the same way. Good pairs: the 8:50 from Takayama with the 13:50 to Kanazawa (4 h 10 min in the village), the 10:50 with the 15:10 (3 h 30 min), or the 11:20 with the 15:55 (3 h 45 min).[1],[2] The Kanazawa leg is always reserved, so book it ahead.[1]

Will a large suitcase fit in a locker?

There is a large size at ¥1,000 per use,[5] but the tourist association does not publish its dimensions. If it does not fit, use the storage service next to the terminal, open until 17:00.[5]

Where can I leave luggage in Kanazawa if I come back later?

At Kanazawa Station, in coin lockers or at the staffed counter. The Kanazawa guide lists the station’s lockers and left-luggage counter.

Can I see Shirakawa-go in the time between buses?

Yes. The tourist association gives roughly 2–3 hours to walk around the village,[5] and each pair in the table gives close to three hours or more.[1],[2],[4]
