Buy the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass if you travel one way between Kansai Airport or Osaka and Nagoya through Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go and Takayama, in either direction. From Kansai Airport, the fares other than the JR basic fare between Takayama and Nagoya already come within ¥870 of the pass.[8],[4],[9],[7],[1] Skip it for a round trip from Nagoya to Takayama and Shirakawa-go: JR Central’s Hida Area Free Ticket costs ¥7,430 less.[6],[1]

What does the pass cover, and what does it not?

JR Central issues the pass. It covers three kinds of transport along one long loop through Gifu, Toyama and Ishikawa.

JR trains. Non-reserved seats on limited express, rapid and local trains between Nagoya and Toyama on the Takayama line, which is the route of the Hida (ひだ) limited express. On the Kansai side, it covers Tsuruga to Kyoto and Osaka City, and Osaka City to Kansai Airport.[1],[3]

The Hokuriku Shinkansen between Toyama and Tsuruga, in non-reserved seats. Kanazawa lies on this stretch.[1],[3]

Reserved seats, up to 6 times. You can use ordinary reserved seats free of charge up to 6 times on the Hokuriku Shinkansen and on limited express trains between Nagoya and Takayama, between Tsuruga and Osaka, and to Kansai Airport. Collect a reserved seating ticket at a ticket center or a reserved seat ticket machine before you board. A seat is not guaranteed on a crowded train.[3],[1]

Highway buses. The Nohi Bus and partner buses between Takayama Nohi Bus Center, Shirakawa-go (白川郷) and Kanazawa or Toyama are included. So are the Takayama–Shirakawa-go–Shin-Takaoka line and the World Heritage Bus between Shirakawa-go and Shin-Takaoka. On the first two lines JR Central notes some exceptions and requires reservations.[1],[2],[3] The Gokayama guide gives the World Heritage Bus stops and times at Ainokura and Suganuma.

Not covered:

  • The Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka. If you ride it, you pay the full fare and fees.[1],[3]
  • Trains between Nagoya and Kyoto: that stretch is not among the sections JR Central lists.[1],[3]
  • Green Cars and Gran Class.[3]
  • The Toyama–Unazuki line to the Kurobe Gorge. Pass holders do get a 10% discount on the Kurobe Gorge Railway itself.[1]

Does the pass pay off on my itinerary?

Compare the pass with the tickets you would otherwise buy. The figures below are for one adult and leave out one item: the JR basic fare between Nagoya and Takayama. JR Central sells the Hida’s limited express ticket separately from that fare, at ¥2,730 in the regular season.[4] Look up the basic fare for your date in e5489 or at a ticket machine, and add it to the totals below. Kanazawa to Osaka is JR West’s Hokuriku-Kansai Ticketless at ¥8,500.[7] The buses use Nohi Bus fares for rides from December 1, 2026.[9],[11]

One adult, reserved seats; Hida at the regular-season price; bus fares from December 1, 2026.

From Kansai Airport to Nagoya: almost certainly yes. The HARUKA to Osaka costs ¥1,900 on its own.[8] With it, everything except the basic fare between Takayama and Nagoya comes to ¥18,930. The pass wins as soon as that basic fare is more than ¥870.[8],[4],[9],[7],[1] The reverse direction adds up the same way.

From Nagoya to Osaka: check the basic fare. The Hida ticket, the two bus rides and the Kanazawa–Osaka ticket come to ¥17,030, so the pass wins if the basic fare from Nagoya to Takayama is more than ¥2,770.[4],[9],[7],[1] In the peak season the Hida ticket costs ¥200 more and in the busiest season ¥400 more, which favours the pass.[4] Before December 1, 2026, each of the two bus rides costs ¥2,800, which favours single tickets.[9],[11] If you arrive in Nagoya on a Shinkansen booked through the EX service, JR Central’s Hayatoku 7 ticket brings the Hida ticket down to ¥1,800 when you book at least 7 days ahead.[5]

A round trip from Nagoya: no. JR Central’s Hida Area Free Ticket costs ¥12,370, ¥7,430 less than the pass. It gives you Hida reserved seats there and back within 3 days and free JR rides between Hida-Kanayama and Hida-Furukawa. It also includes a Nohi Bus voucher for either a Shirakawa-go round trip, though not on reservation-only buses, or the Takayama & Shin-Hotaka free ticket.[6],[1] It cannot be used from April 27 to May 6, from August 10 to August 19, or from December 28 into early January.[6] The Nagoya to Takayama guide compares the Hida with the highway bus.

How do I reserve the Shirakawa-go buses?

The Shirakawa-go buses on the pass need reservations, and the pass does not book them for you.[1],[2],[3] Book each bus ride separately, as soon as your dates are fixed. To decide how long to stop between buses, the Shirakawa-go guide covers what to see in the village and how long it takes.

  1. Call the bus company

Nohi Bus accepts the pass on reservation-only buses, but pass holders cannot book online. Call the Nohi Bus Reservation Center on 0577-32-1688 instead.[10],[11] Nohi Bus also lists the Hokurikutetsudou Reservation Center for the Kanazawa line (076-234-0123) and the Toyama Chihou Highway Bus Reservation Center for the Toyama line (076-433-4890).[11]

  2. Collect the seat ticket before boarding

On the day, show the pass at the ticket counter before you board. You receive a seat reservation ticket for that bus.[10],[11]

If you travel with large bags, the Shirakawa-go luggage guide covers the bus trunk and the lockers at the bus terminal.

How do I buy the pass and reserve seats?

  1. Buy the pass

Book online through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION from one month before boarding, from 10:00 am JST. You can also buy it from a travel agent outside Japan or at a station.[1],[2] Bring your passport: staff can ask to see it.[3]

  2. Reserve train seats before you board

Collect a free reserved seating ticket at a ticket center or a reserved seat ticket machine for each Hida (Nagoya–Takayama), Shinkansen or Thunderbird ride, up to 6 in total. Without one, you ride in the non-reserved cars.[3],[1]

  3. Change trains at Tsuruga

Between Kanazawa and Osaka you change at Tsuruga, where the pass’s Shinkansen section ends. The trains on from Tsuruga to Osaka are covered too.[1],[3] [1],[3]

The Tsuruga transfer guide explains the floors and gates you pass through when you change trains there.

Who it suits

  • One-way trips from Kansai Airport or Osaka to Nagoya through Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go and Takayama, or the reverse
  • Travellers who want the Shirakawa-go buses included
  • Free reserved seats on the Hida between Nagoya and Takayama, the Hokuriku Shinkansen and the Thunderbird, up to 6 times

Who should skip it

  • Round trips from Nagoya to Takayama and Shirakawa-go
  • Trips that use the Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka
  • Anyone who is not a foreign national with “temporary visitor” status
  • Travellers who want flexibility: the pass is not extended when trains are delayed or suspended

For a Tokyo–Kanazawa–Osaka trip, the Hokuriku Arch Pass review works out when that pass pays off.

For longer trips across several regions, the Japan Rail Pass review shows which routes justify the nationwide pass.
