Hakodate to Sapporo (2026): ¥9,770 Train vs Bus vs Plane
Take the Limited Express Hokuto: about 3 h 30 min and ¥9,770 one way for adults. The highway bus is cheaper but slower, and flying rarely saves time.

For most travellers, take the JR Limited Express Hokuto (特急北斗): it is the fastest station-to-station option and runs between the two city centres. Take the Kosoku Hakodate-go highway bus if price matters more than time. Flying only makes sense when you are already at the airport, for example connecting to an onward flight at New Chitose. If you are still deciding how long to stay before you leave, the Hakodate guide covers the sights and how many nights they need.

Limited Express Hokuto: who it suits, and the catch
The Hokuto suits almost everyone: it runs from Hakodate Station to Sapporo Station in about 3 h 30 min,[7] and you keep your bags with you. The adult price is ¥9,770 one way, as listed by JR Hokkaido on October 6, 2026.[1]

JR Hokkaido’s timetable, based on the October 2026 edition, has 11 Hokuto trains a day from Hakodate to Sapporo.[6] The first leaves at 6:02 and arrives at 9:47;[6] the last leaves at 18:43 and arrives at 22:41.[6]
The catch is that you cannot just walk on: you need a reserved seat limited express ticket on top of the basic fare ticket.[2] Buy both before you board, at the station or online: JR Hokkaido sells its limited express tickets through JR-EAST Train Reservation.[1] An IC card such as Kitaca or Suica is not enough for this train.
Not every Hokuto makes the same stops. As of March 2026, Train No.2 does not stop at Onumakoen or Goryokaku, and JR Hokkaido notes that stops differ by train.[2] Check your train before planning a stopover.
Does a rail pass cover the Hokuto, and does it pay off?
Yes, two passes cover it. The Japan Rail Pass is valid on JR limited express trains,[4] and our Japan Rail Pass review works out whether it pays for your whole route. The Hokkaido Rail Pass from JR Hokkaido covers all its lines, including reserved seats on limited express trains, but not the Hokkaido Shinkansen.[3]
For a trip based in Sapporo, the numbers are close. JR Hokkaido gives 19,540 yen in regular tickets for a Sapporo–Hakodate round trip,[1] and the 5-day Hokkaido Rail Pass at ¥22,000 when bought in advance.[1] So the pass costs a little more than the round trip alone: it pays off as soon as you add one more train ride that makes up the difference within the five days, such as a day trip to Otaru or Noboribetsu. If you only go to Hakodate and back, buy single tickets. For other routes around Hokkaido, the Hokkaido Rail Pass review works out when the pass pays off.
Highway bus: who it suits, and the catch
The Kosoku Hakodate-go, run jointly by Hokkaido Chuo Bus and Hakodate Bus, suits you if the fare matters most. Booked and paid online, an adult one-way seat costs 3,530 yen to 5,990 yen; at a counter or by phone it is 5,990 yen.[8]

In the summer timetable updated July 1, 2026, buses leave Hakodate Ekimae (函館駅前, in front of Hakodate Station) at 7:18, 8:58, 13:28 and 15:58,[8] and reach Sapporo Ekimae at 13:20, 15:00, 19:05 and 21:15.[8] The first two also stop at New Chitose Airport’s international terminal at 12:13 and 13:53,[8] which is useful if you fly out the same day.
The catch is time and planning. The trip takes about 5 hours 55 minutes.[8] The bus is reservation-only: book and pay before you board, from 2 months before your travel date.[8] Large suitcases go in the trunk, and the operators say they are not liable for loss or damage,[8] so keep valuables with you.
Flying: who it suits, and the catch
Flying suits two cases: you are connecting to another flight at New Chitose, or you find a cheap seat and your hotel is near Okadama Airport. The City of Hakodate gives about 40 min in the air from both New Chitose and Okadama to Hakodate Airport.[7]

The catch is the ground time. Hakodate Airport is approximately 20 minutes by bus from Hakodate Station,[9] and you also need to get to and from the airport in Sapporo. Add check-in and the security line, and door to door the plane is rarely faster than the Hokuto.
What about driving?
The City of Hakodate gives the drive from Sapporo to Hakodate as 304 km, about 4 h 40 min.[7] That is longer than the train. Drive only if you plan stops along the way, and read what you need to drive in Japan first.
How do I decide?
Four questions that settle it
- Do you have a Japan Rail Pass or Hokkaido Rail Pass? Take the Hokuto.
- Is the fare the deciding factor, and can you spend most of a day on the road? Take the bus.
- Are you flying out of New Chitose the same day? Take an early bus that stops there, or the train.
- Is it winter? Prefer the train, and check JR Hokkaido’s operation information on the morning you travel.
