Privacy Policy

What data this site collects, which third parties are involved, and your choices.

Updated

This policy explains what information is collected when you use Japan Trip Navi, how it is used, and the choices you have. The site is operated from Japan and complies with the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI); where the GDPR or the UK GDPR applies to you, the rights described below are available to you as well.

Information we collect

We do not ask you to create an account and do not collect payment details. The only personal information you can send us is what you choose to type into the contact form. The following is collected automatically by the services we use:

  • Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are read and how visitors arrive. It records pages viewed, approximate location derived from a truncated IP address, device and browser type, and referring site. IP addresses are anonymised. We use this data only to see how the site is read and which articles to update, not to target advertising.
  • Advertising. We use Google AdSense to show advertisements. Google and its partners may use cookies or similar identifiers to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites, and to measure ad performance. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland you will be asked for consent before such cookies are set, and you can change your choice at any time from the “Privacy and cookie settings” link shown at the bottom of the page.
  • Hosting and images. Pages are served by Cloudflare and images by Cloudflare R2. Cloudflare processes connection data (IP address, request headers) to deliver the site and protect it from abuse, as described in Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
  • Maps. Some articles show a Google Maps map, loaded from Google when you scroll to it. Loading it sends your IP address and browser details to Google, which may set its own cookies, as described in Google’s privacy policy. The rest of the page works without it.
  • Search. The on-site search runs entirely in your browser; your queries are not sent to us.
  • Contact form. Messages sent from the contact page are stored with Google Forms and Google Sheets. They contain only what you type: your email address, the optional name and article link, and the message. They are used to reply and to correct articles, and are deleted when no longer needed.

How the information is used

Analytics data is used in aggregate to decide which topics to cover and which articles to update. Advertising data is used by Google to select and measure ads. We do not sell personal information and do not share it with third parties other than the service providers named above.

Cookies

Google Analytics sets first-party cookies to distinguish visitors. Google AdSense may set third-party cookies for ad personalisation and measurement. Embedded Google Maps may set Google cookies when a map loads. You can control cookies in your browser settings, opt out of personalised advertising at Google’s Ads Settings, and opt out of Analytics with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Some articles contain affiliate links to booking services. They are labelled as advertising. If you click one, the destination site may set its own cookies to attribute a booking to this site; we receive no personal information about you from that process.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data held about you, to object to or restrict its processing, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Because we hold no account data, most requests concern data processed by Google or Cloudflare, and we will help you direct them. Send requests through the contact page, choosing “Privacy request”.

Changes

This policy is updated when the services we use change. The date at the top of the page shows the last revision.
