Where to Stay in Takayama (2026): Station, Old Town or Onsen

Stay by Takayama Station for buses, near Sanmachi (a 12-minute walk) for quiet evenings, or in Okuhida with a 17:30 last bus back. Plus the city tax.

Stay near JR Takayama Station if you have one night, an early bus to Shirakawa-go or heavy luggage. Stay on the old-town side, near Sanmachi (三町) and the Miyagawa River, if you have two nights and want quiet evenings and early mornings in the old streets. The two are close: Sanmachi is a 12 minute walk from the station,[1] so neither choice is a mistake. An onsen ryokan out in Okuhida (奥飛騨) is worth it only if you plan around the bus, because the last one back to Takayama leaves Hirayu Onsen at 17:30.[5]

Key facts

  • The pick for most first visits: the station area, next to the Nohi Bus Center for Shirakawa-go and Okuhida buses.[3]
  • Two nights or more: the old-town side; Sanmachi is a 12 minute walk from the station.[1]
  • Budget-minded: a simple room by the station, with the Machinami loop bus at ¥100 a ride for the old town.[3]
  • Skip an Okuhida ryokan for a single night without a car: the last bus from Takayama arrives at Hirayu Onsen at 19:35.[5]
  • City tax: ¥100, ¥200 or ¥300 per person per night, by room charge.[11],[12]

Which base fits my trip?

Start from what you do first and last each day: catch a bus, walk the old streets at dawn, or soak in an onsen. The table sets the bases side by side.

For a first visit of one or two nights, the station area is the safe default: the buses for Shirakawa-go, Okuhida and the long-distance routes all leave from the Nohi Bus Center by the station.[3] Pick the old-town side if the town itself is the reason for your trip. Pick Okuhida only if a long onsen evening matters more than seeing Takayama after dark.

Takayama Station area: best for a short stay?

Yes. The Nohi Bus Center sits just outside JR Takayama Station, behind the police box, and it serves the city loop buses, the Okuhida buses and the express buses to Shirakawa-go, Tokyo and other cities.[3] For a Shirakawa-go morning, a room across the street means no taxi and no rush with your bag. The Takayama guide explains how to book the Shirakawa-go bus and what to see in town.

The station area also solves the luggage problem on arrival and departure days. Bags too large for a coin locker can be checked in at the Nohi Bus Center for ¥500 a day.[3] That lets you check out, walk the old town and collect the bag before your train or bus.

The catch is atmosphere: the old streets are a walk away, not outside your door. Sanmachi is a 12 minute walk[1] and the Miyagawa Morning Market a 15-minute walk.[2] If you would rather ride, the Machinami Bus loops through central Takayama for ¥100 a ride, and preschool children ride free.[3]

Near Sanmachi: best for two nights?

Yes, if you can carry your bag a short way. Sanmachi is the preserved merchant quarter, lined with traditional townhouses and sake breweries.[1] Staying beside it gives you the hours that day visitors miss: the Miyagawa Morning Market by the river runs from 7:00 to noon from April to November and from 8:00 to noon from December to March.[2] From the station it is a 15-minute walk,[2] but from an old-town inn you can be there when the stalls open.

The streets between the station and the old town are a fair compromise. You are closer to Sanmachi than the station hotels are, and the walk back to the bus center is still short.

Check how you will reach the door before you book. Takayama City notes that a taxi is sometimes the only option when an inn is far from a bus stop, and that you call a taxi or find one at the stand near the station or on busy streets.[3] The city also warns that on weekends, at the end of the year and on snowy days the wait can be more than one hour.[3] With a large suitcase and a winter arrival, a room nearer the station is less stress.

Not every inn with tatami rooms includes dinner. If a ryokan meal is part of what you want, check the meal plan when you book. The ryokan guide explains how meals, check-in and baths usually work.

A ryokan in Okuhida or Gero: what do you gain, and how do you get back?

You gain a hot-spring evening in the mountains; you give up evenings in Takayama. Okuhida Onsengo is the collective name for five hot spring areas: Hirayu, Fukuji, Shinhirayu, Tochio and Shinhotaka.[6] Nohi Bus runs to them from the Nohi Bus Center. In its timetable from April 1, 2026, the 9:40 departure reaches Hirayu Onsen at 10:38.[5]

The bus times decide whether this works:

  • Going out: the last bus from Takayama leaves at 18:40 and reaches Hirayu Onsen at 19:35.[5] If your plan includes dinner, ask the ryokan by what time you need to arrive.
  • Coming back: the last bus from Hirayu Onsen leaves at 17:30 and arrives at the Nohi Bus Center at 18:31.[5] A day in Takayama from an Okuhida base ends early.
  • In winter: Nohi Bus warns of significant delays from heavy snow and traffic in Takayama.[6] Leave slack before any onward train.

Gero is the other onsen option, on the JR Takayama Line. JR West describes Gero Onsen as a 3 min. walk from JR Gero Station, which the limited express Hida serves.[7] It suits a night on the way in or out by train rather than a base for Takayama days. If you have tattoos, read the onsen and tattoo rules before you choose a ryokan with shared baths only.

A night in Shirakawa-go instead?

Only if the village at night is the point of your trip. The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association lists stays in traditional gassho-style houses as well as inns.[9] A night there frees you from the last bus. In the village’s timetable from April 1, 2026, the latest listed departure for Takayama leaves Shirakawa-go (Ogimachi) at 17:30 and arrives at 18:35, but some services do not run on weekends and public holidays, so check the running days of the bus you plan to take.[8] For most visitors a day trip from a Takayama base is easier, and the guide to Shirakawa-go with luggage covers lockers and moving on with a suitcase.

The winter Light-Up nights are the exception that books out. The event is held on January 11, January 17, January 24 and January 31, 2027,[9] and the accommodation the Tourist Association handles is allocated by lottery, not first come, first served.[9] If you do not win a room, stay in Takayama or Kanazawa.

How many nights do I need?

One night covers the old town if you arrive by midday. Two nights let you add a Shirakawa-go day without rushing: a morning bus from the Nohi Bus Center[3] and an evening back in town. Add a night in Okuhida only on top of that, not instead of it. To time a midday arrival from Nagoya, the Nagoya to Takayama guide lists the Hida trains.

If you are moving between Takayama and Kanazawa anyway, you can stay in either. VISIT KANAZAWA gives the route as 1 hr 30 min on the Hida limited express to Toyama plus 20 min on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, or 50 min by highway bus to Shirakawa-go plus 1 hr 15 min on to Kanazawa.[10] That is a long day trip each way, so most travellers sleep in the town they want to see at dawn. For the Kanazawa side, see where to stay in Kanazawa.

What does the accommodation tax add?

Takayama City’s accommodation tax was scheduled to take effect on October 1, 2025. It covers stays at hotels, ryokan, simple lodgings and registered private lodging (minpaku) in the city.[11],[13] The rate depends on the lodging charge per person per night: ¥100 under ¥10,000, ¥200 from ¥10,000 to under ¥30,000, and ¥300 at ¥30,000 or more.[11],[12] The accommodation collects it from you and pays it to the city.[11],[12]

Children up to the March 31 after their 12th birthday are exempt, as are school-trip groups with their teachers and helpers.[11] Check whether your booking shows it separately from the room price.

Frequently asked questions

Which base is best with kids?

The station area. Large bags can wait at the Nohi Bus Center for ¥500 a day,[3] and the Machinami loop bus to the old town is free for preschool children.[3] Children up to the March 31 after their 12th birthday pay no city tax.[11]

Is Takayama walkable in snow?

The center is compact, but plan for slow going. Taxi waits can exceed an hour on snowy days,[3] and the Okuhida buses can run late in heavy snow.[6] A room near the station keeps the walk with luggage short.

Should I base myself in Takayama or Kanazawa?

Sleep in the town you want to see early and late. The trip between them takes most of a morning either by train via Toyama or by bus via Shirakawa-go.[10]

Can I store luggage after checking out?

Yes. The Nohi Bus Center by JR Takayama Station checks in bags too large for a coin locker for ¥500 a day.[3]
