Match the railway to where you start: from Kyoto Station take the JR Special Rapid Service to Osaka Station; from downtown Kyoto (Shijo-Kawaramachi, Karasuma) or Arashiyama take the Hankyu Railway to Osaka-umeda; from Gion and the Higashiyama side take the Keihan Main Line to Kyobashi or Yodoyabashi. The Shinkansen only makes sense if you are going to Shin-Osaka itself, because Shin-Osaka is not central Osaka.

Key facts

  • Fastest into central Osaka: JR Special Rapid Service, approximately 30 minutes from Kyoto Station to Osaka Station.[1]
  • Downtown Kyoto to Umeda: Hankyu, approximately 45 minutes from Kyoto-kawaramachi to Osaka-umeda.[1]
  • Gion to Osaka: Keihan Limited Express, approximately 48 minutes between Gion-Shijo or Sanjo and Yodoyabashi.[1]
  • Shinkansen: arrives at Shin-Osaka, not central Osaka; JR and Osaka Metro trains on to Osaka Station run every 5 to 10 minutes.[2]
  • Seats: Keihan’s Premium Car costs the regular fare plus ¥400 to ¥500; Hankyu also sells reserved seats on some limited expresses (check Hankyu’s site).[3]

Base fares are missing from this page on purpose. JR West, Hankyu and Keihan publish their Kyoto–Osaka fares in fare-search tools and fare charts that our source tools could not read as text, so rather than copy a figure from a third party we name where to look: JR West’s route search, Hankyu’s fare search and Keihan’s fare table (運賃表) on their own websites, or the fare chart above the ticket machines at any station.

Travel times from the operators and the official Kyoto and Osaka tourism guides, checked October 4, 2026.

The JR figure comes from the Kyoto City Tourism Association’s Kyoto Travel site: approximately 30 minutes from Osaka Station to Kyoto Station by Special Rapid Service.[1] For Hankyu, the same site gives approximately 45 minutes between Osaka-umeda and Kyoto-kawaramachi.[1] For Keihan, it gives approximately 48 minutes from Yodoyabashi to Gion-Shijo and Sanjo by Limited Express; Kyobashi is an earlier stop on the same line.[1]

Hankyu: downtown Kyoto and Arashiyama

Kyoto City’s guide recommends Hankyu from central Osaka if you are heading to Karasuma, Kyoto-Kawaramachi or Arashiyama (Hankyu Arashiyama Station).[1] For a guaranteed seat, Hankyu sells reserved PRiVACE seats on some Kyoto Line limited expresses; check the current price and trains on Hankyu’s website.

Keihan: Gion, Sanjo and the east side

Keihan’s Kyoto stations include Gion-Shijo, Sanjo and Demachiyanagi, and Kyoto City’s guide points to Keihan for Gion-Shijo and Sanjo.[1] For a reserved seat, Keihan’s Premium Car costs the regular fare plus ¥400 to ¥500, according to Keihan’s guide valid as of April 2026; check Keihan’s site for the trains that carry it.[3]

Shinkansen: only if you need Shin-Osaka

The Tokaido Shinkansen stops at Shin-Osaka, which Osaka’s official guide calls the Shinkansen terminal; Osaka Station is a further JR or Osaka Metro ride, with trains every 5 to 10 minutes.[2] It suits you if you are continuing west by Shinkansen or staying near Shin-Osaka. If you arrived from Tokyo, the Tokyo to Kyoto Shinkansen guide explains the tickets and platforms at Kyoto Station.
