Yes, but only for one short section, and only if you catch the first limited express. Daimonzaka (大門坂) to Kumano Nachi Taisha (熊野那智大社) fits a same-day round trip from Osaka: the first Kuroshio leaves Shin-Osaka at 07:34 and reaches Kii-Katsuura (紀伊勝浦) at 11:40,[1],[2] and the last one back leaves Kii-Katsuura at 18:04.[3],[4] A full Nakahechi stage does not fit in a day, and the popular Hosshinmon-oji (発心門王子) walk works best with a night in the Hongu area.[8]

Key facts

  • Best day walk: Daimonzaka to Kumano Nachi Taisha, about 600 meters of stone steps.[6]
  • Train out: Shin-Osaka 07:34, Kii-Katsuura 11:40 (first Kuroshio of the day).[1],[2]
  • Bus to the trail: 11:50 from Kii-Katsuura Station, at Daimonzaka 12:08.[5]

Which section fits in a day?

Three short walks are reachable from Osaka. Only the first one has a same-day connection we could confirm in both directions without a seasonal bus. The times below come from JR West’s timetables for October 2026 and the bureau’s 2026 bus timetables.

Sources for the table: the trains,[1],[2] the Nachi buses,[5] the Daimonzaka walk,[6] the Takijiri section,[10] the Express Bus,[12] the Hosshinmon walk[9],[8] and the last train from Kii-Tanabe.[3],[4]

Daimonzaka is also the gentlest: the bureau gives it a difficulty rating of 1.5, for about 30 minutes on the slope itself.[6]

How do I walk Daimonzaka to Nachi in a day?

Daimonzaka is a stone staircase about 600 meters long with 267 steps. It climbs from the valley to the shrine and temple complex at Nachisan.[6]

  1. Take the first Kuroshio from Shin-Osaka07:34

The first Kuroshio of the day arrives at Kii-Katsuura at 11:40.[1],[2] It also calls at Kii-Tanabe at 09:58.[1],[2]

  2. Bus from Kii-Katsuura Station to Daimonzaka11:50

Take the Kumano Gobo Nankai bus towards Nachisan and get off at Daimonzaka at 12:08.[5]

  3. Climb Daimonzaka~30 min

The slope takes about 30 minutes.[6] From the top, climb another 20 minutes to Kumano Nachi Taisha and Seiganto-ji.[6]

  4. Walk down to the falls

The bureau suggests seeing the shrine grounds first, then walking down past the pagoda to the falls.[6] The falls viewpoint charges adults 300 yen and is open 7:00~17:00.[7]

  5. Bus from Nachisan back to Kii-Katsuura17:12

This bus arrives at Kii-Katsuura Station at 17:38.[5] Do not wait for the last bus: it leaves Nachisan at 18:04 and reaches the station at 18:30,[5] after your train has gone.

  6. Last Kuroshio to Osaka18:04

It leaves Kii-Katsuura at 18:04 and reaches Shin-Osaka at 22:08.[3],[4]

For the shrines, the falls and the longer walks around Nachi, see the full Kumano Kodo guide.

Can I walk from Takijiri instead?

Yes, for a short climb, and only while the seasonal Express Bus runs. The section, Takijiri to Takahara, is 3.7 km, ~2 hr and rated 2.5.[10] There is no confirmed bus for the walk out, so plan to walk back down to Takijiri the same way.

  1. Kuroshio to Kii-Tanabe07:34

The first Kuroshio from Shin-Osaka arrives at Kii-Tanabe at 09:58.[1],[2]

  2. Bus to Takijiri10:25

Buses via Takijiri leave Kii-Tanabe Station at 10:25 and 10:30.[11] The adult fare to Takijiri is ¥970.[11]

  3. Walk to Takahara and back

Allow about as long for the descent as for the climb, and be back at the Takijiri stop well before the bus.

  4. Express Bus back to Kii-Tanabe17:14

The Kumano Kodo Express Bus calls at Takijiri at 17:14 and reaches Kii-Tanabe Station at 17:46.[13] It runs daily from September 19 to December 10, 2026, with no reservation.[12]

  5. Last Kuroshio to Osaka19:50

It leaves Kii-Tanabe at 19:50 and reaches Shin-Osaka at 22:08.[3],[4]

Outside that period we could not confirm a return bus from Takijiri that meets the last train, so check the bureau’s current timetable before you commit.

Why not Hosshinmon-oji to Hongu in a day?

The walk itself is short: about 7 km, or 2–3 hours.[9],[8] Getting there from Osaka is the problem. The Express Bus leaves Kii-Tanabe at 6:55 and reaches Hosshinmon-oji at 8:54,[13] long before the first Kuroshio arrives at 09:58.[1],[2] Its return trip leaves Hosshinmon-oji at 15:45.[13] We could not confirm a regular-bus connection that gets you from that first train to Hosshinmon-oji and back to the last train.

The bureau’s own advice is to sleep in the Hongu area, at Yunomine, Kawayu or Watarase Onsen, and take the bus or an inn shuttle to Hosshinmon-oji in the morning.[8] What to expect at a Japanese inn is covered in the ryokan guide.

What can change the plan?

Weather is the biggest risk. The bureau says the Kii Peninsula is one of the wettest areas in Japan, typhoons can cause floods and landslides, and JR trains are sometimes stopped or late because of them.[16] Trails and roads are also closed after landslides; check the Detours and Closures section of the bureau’s Tips & Safety page on the morning you go.[16]

The Takijiri plan depends on the Express Bus, which stops after December 10, 2026.[12]

If the timings feel too tight, a guided day tour from Osaka removes the connections from your plan.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave my luggage near the station?

At Kii-Tanabe, the TANABE Tourist Information Center next to the station stores bags between 9:00 and 18:00 for 500 yen per bag, per day, with no reservation.[15] It closes before the Express Bus gets back, so on the Takijiri plan keep your bag with you.

I am staying in Kyoto. Does this still work?

The bureau notes that not all Kuroshio trains run to or from Kyoto.[14] Go to Shin-Osaka first and board the 07:34 there;[1],[2] the Kyoto to Osaka routes cover that leg.

Do I need a guide?

No. The Daimonzaka walk is short, with a difficulty rating of 1.5 from the bureau.[6]
