From Kyoto or Osaka, take the Limited Express Thunderbird (サンダーバード) to Tsuruga (敦賀) and change there to a Hokuriku Shinkansen (bullet train) for Kanazawa (金沢). You change floors inside the station without leaving the gates, and JR West times the connections around a standard transfer of 8 minutes.[5],[2] Book both trains on one ticket purchase, with the seat numbers for both legs, and the change is simple.

Key facts

  • From Osaka Station: Thunderbird to Tsuruga in 1 hour 20 minutes, then the Shinkansen to Kanazawa in 40 minutes.[1]
  • From Kyoto Station: Thunderbird to Tsuruga in 45 minutes, then the Shinkansen in 1 hour.[1]
  • Transfer time at Tsuruga: 8 minutes is JR West’s standard.[5],[2]
  • Fare example: Osaka to Kanazawa costs ¥8,500 in total for one adult with JR West’s Hokuriku-Kansai Ticketless.[7]
  • Big suitcases: no oversized-baggage seat reservation on either train.[9],[10]

The train is the faster choice from both cities. Visit Kanazawa gives 1 hour 20 minutes from Osaka Station to Tsuruga on the Thunderbird and 40 minutes on the Shinkansen from there.[1] From Kyoto Station it is 45 minutes to Tsuruga and 1 hour on the Shinkansen.[1]

The express bus takes no change but much longer: 4 hours 30 minutes from Kyoto Station and 6 hours from Osaka Station, in Visit Kanazawa’s listing.[1] Fares vary by date and operator, so compare them on the bus operator’s site if price matters more than time.

When the line opened, JR West planned 25 Thunderbird plus Tsurugi round trips a day between Osaka and Kanazawa when the line opened on March 16, 2024; check the current timetable for today’s count.[2] The Thunderbird also stops at Kyoto Station on the way.[3] If you still need to get from one city to the other first, the Kyoto to Osaka train guide compares the lines.

How do I change trains at Tsuruga?

The Thunderbird arrives on floor 1, the transfer gates are on floor 2, and the Hokuriku Shinkansen leaves from floor 3.[2],[4] You go up two floors and pass one gate; you do not exit the station.

Places

Tsuruga Station

Nearest Station
Tsuruga Station itself: Hokuriku Shinkansen (tracks 11–14, floor 3), Limited Express Thunderbird and Shirasagi (tracks 33–34, floor 1), transfer gates on floor 2; JR West's standard Shinkansen–limited express transfer time is 8 minutes
  1. Check your next train's car and seat before you arrive

Look at your Shinkansen ticket or booking while you are still on the Thunderbird. JR West asks you to check the car and seat number of your next train before you transfer.[4],[6]

  2. Get off on floor 1 and follow the Shinkansen signs

The Thunderbird uses tracks 33 and 34.[5] JR West marks the elevators, escalators and stairs with signs; on the escalators, stand in two rows rather than walking.[4]

  3. Pass the transfer gate on floor 2

Put the tickets for the Thunderbird and the tickets for the Shinkansen into the gate together.[4],[6] With an IC card only, just touch it; with paper tickets and an IC card, put the tickets through first and then touch the card.[6] With 5 or more paper tickets, or tickets bought from the conductor, use the staffed aisle.[6]

  4. Go up to floor 3 and board the Shinkansen8 min standard

The Hokuriku Shinkansen uses tracks 11 to 14, toward Kanazawa and Tokyo.[5] JR West’s standard transfer time for the whole change is 8 minutes.[5],[2]

If you want to see the route first, JR West publishes a transfer video of about 3 minutes for each direction.[4]

Which ticket do I buy?

You need a fare and a limited-express ticket for both trains. Book both legs in one purchase, with reserved seats, so that you hold the tickets for both trains when you reach the transfer gate.[4],[6]

There are three common ways to do it:

  • HOKURIKU One-way Ticket (foreign visitors only). JR West prices it at ¥8,000 for adults between Osaka City and Kanazawa and ¥6,500 between Kyoto City and Kanazawa, current as of February 5, 2025.[8] It is only for holders of a foreign passport entering Japan as a Temporary Visitor, and you buy it as an exchange order from a travel agency outside Japan; it is not sold in Japan.[8] It covers ordinary reserved and non-reserved seats on the Thunderbird and on the Shinkansen between Tsuruga and Toyama, and you reserve the seats at a ticket vending machine or a ticket counter in Japan.[8]
  • Hokuriku-Kansai Ticketless (booked online with JR West). From Osaka to Kanazawa it costs ¥6,190 plus ¥2,310 taken from your IC card for the Thunderbird fare, ¥8,500 in total for one adult in an ordinary reserved seat.[7] It is sold by credit card only, from 10:00 one month before the travel date until 4 minutes before departure, and you ride with the IC card you register to the booking.[7]
  • Regular tickets. A reserved-seat ticket machine or ticket counter in Kyoto or Osaka sells the fare and both limited-express tickets together; ask for seats on both trains.

If you have a rail pass, the Japan Rail Pass review explains when it pays off; a separate review of the Hokuriku Arch Pass is planned.

What about big suitcases?

You can bring a large suitcase on both trains without a special reservation. JR West requires a reserved seat with an oversized baggage area for luggage over 160 cm and up to 250 cm only on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen; the Hokuriku Shinkansen is not on that list, and conventional lines such as the Thunderbird are not covered.[9],[10]

The general limits still apply: up to 2 pieces, each within 250 cm in total dimensions (length up to 2 m) and 30 kg.[9] At Tsuruga, use the elevators shown on the signs rather than the escalators if your bags are heavy.[4]

What if I travel late, on a busy day or in bad weather?

The evening connections are the ones to plan around. In JR West’s spring 2026 timetable notice, Thunderbird 47 leaves Osaka at 20:07 and Kyoto at 20:38 and reaches Tsuruga at 21:33; Tsurugi 48 then leaves at 21:42 and reaches Kanazawa at 22:39.[3] Check JR West’s timetable for later trains on your date before you rely on any evening departure.

On days when heavy use is expected, JR West adds a temporary pair: Thunderbird 93 (Osaka 19:54, Kyoto 20:25, Tsuruga 21:18) with Tsurugi 94 (Tsuruga 21:27, Kanazawa 22:07).[3]

Once you arrive, the Kanazawa guide covers the station lockers, the loop bus and what to see first.

Questions travellers ask

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an ICOCA or Suica for this trip?

Yes, in two cases. With JR West’s Hokuriku-Kansai Ticketless you ride with the IC card registered to the booking, and the Thunderbird fare is taken from it.[7] At the Tsuruga transfer gate, IC card users simply touch the card, but JR West notes that some sections cannot be travelled on an IC card alone.[6]

Is 8 minutes really enough with luggage?

It is JR West’s standard transfer time, and the timetable is built around it.[5],[2] You stay inside the station, so allow for the escalators and the gate rather than for walking outside.[2],[4]

How does it work from Kanazawa back to Kyoto or Osaka?

The same in reverse: the Shinkansen arrives on floor 3, you pass the transfer gate on floor 2 and take the Thunderbird from floor 1.[2],[4] JR West’s transfer video covers this direction too.[4]

How much are children's tickets?

On the HOKURIKU One-way Ticket, children aged 6-11 pay ¥4,000 from Osaka City and ¥3,250 from Kyoto City.[8]
