Yes, Shirakawa-go (白川郷) works as a day trip from Kanazawa. The easiest plan is the 8:40 bus from Kanazawa Station West Exit, which reaches the village at 10:05,[1],[4] and the 13:50 back, which reaches Kanazawa at 15:05.[2],[4] That gives you 3 h 45 min in the village.[1],[2],[4] Book both buses ahead: every bus between Kanazawa and the village is reserved-seat only,[1] and seats go on sale one month before your travel date.[1]

Key facts

  • Adult fare: ¥2,800 one way for rides through November 30, 2026; ¥2,900 from December 1, 2026.[1],[2],[3]
  • Ride: 75 to 85 minutes each way.[1],[4]
  • Booking: opens one month ahead, on the same date.[1]
  • Boarding stop: Kanazawa Station West Exit, bus stop No. 4.[1]
  • Last bus back: 17:30 from Shirakawa-go, arriving in Kanazawa at 18:45.[2],[4]
  • Time to allow in the village: roughly 2–3 hours.[5]

Bus or tour?

Take the public bus if you want to choose your own times and pay the lowest fare. Take Hokuriku Railroad’s guided tour if you travel on a weekend or holiday and want Gokayama added without planning anything.

Which bus pair gives me enough time in the village?

On the Takayama line, nine buses a day run each way. From Kanazawa they leave at 8:10, 8:40, 9:10, 9:40, 11:10, 13:00, 13:20, 14:00 and 16:00.[1],[4] From Shirakawa-go (Ogimachi) they leave at 8:50, 10:25, 10:55, 11:25, 12:20, 13:50, 15:10, 15:55 and 17:30.[2],[4] The table pairs the outbound and return buses that give the village the 2–3 hours the tourist association suggests.[5]

Two more pairs work if those are full: the 9:40 out with the 13:50 back gives 2 h 45 min, and the 14:00 out with the last bus at 17:30 gives 2 h 5 min.[1],[2],[4] The afternoon pairs are tight in practice, because the lockers at the bus terminal close at 17:00.[5] The 8:40 out is the most comfortable choice for a first visit: it gives the longest stay and still leaves later buses to fall back on.

What does the day look like on the 8:40 bus?

Here is the 8:40 out and 13:50 back, hour by hour. Only the bus and shuttle times are fixed; fit the walk and lunch into the gap.

How do I book a seat?

Book online in English or by phone. The seat is yours only once the ticket is paid.

  1. Check the date one month ahead1 min

Sales open on the same calendar date one month before you travel, so set a reminder for that day.[1]

  2. Book online or by phone10 min

Nohi Bus, which runs the line with Hokuriku Railroad, sends online bookings for reserved-seat services to Japan Bus Online, which works in English.[2] If you prefer to call, Hokuriku Railroad’s Telephone Service Center takes reservations from 8:00 to 18:00 every day.[1] Book the return bus at the same time as the outbound one.

  3. Pay before the deadline

A booking that is not paid by the purchase deadline shown when you reserve is cancelled automatically, and the seat goes back on sale.[1]

  4. Board with your ticket and card

If you paid online, bring the mobile ticket or a printout of the web ticket, and show the credit card you paid with when you board.[1]

Children ride for ¥1,400 one way for rides through November 30, 2026, which is also the fare for passengers with disabilities.[1],[3] The child fare from December 1, 2026 has not been published yet, so check it when you book.[1],[2],[3]

Where does the bus leave from in Kanazawa?

From the West Exit (西口) of Kanazawa Station, bus stop No. 4.[1] Check the exit name on the signs: the station has an East Exit as well, and the bus does not stop there. If you want to leave bags in town for the day, the Kanazawa guide covers the station’s coin lockers.

Large suitcases are a gamble on this bus. Luggage goes on the overhead rack or in the trunk under the floor, you load and unload it yourself, and long items such as skis, snowboards and large instruments are refused.[1]

What can I see in Shirakawa-go in three hours?

Enough to walk the whole village of Ogimachi (荻町): the tourist association gives roughly 2–3 hours for the loop.[5] A good start is the view from the observation deck above the village. On its regular schedule the shuttle bus runs up from 9:00 to 15:40 and back down from 9:10 to 16:10, with a break around noon. Check the times posted at the stop on the day.[4],[6] Then walk back down through the lanes between the thatched houses. The Shirakawa-go guide lists the houses you can go inside and what they cost.

One practical point: the coin lockers at Shirakawago Bus Terminal cost ¥500 for a small or medium box and ¥1,000 for a large one,[5] and both the lockers and the luggage storage next to the terminal close at 17:00.[5]

The village’s history, the houses worth entering and the onward bus to Takayama are in the Takayama guide’s Shirakawa-go section.

What if the bus is full?

Sold-out dates happen because the seats go on sale on a fixed day and nobody can board without one.[1] Check again in the days before travel, since unpaid bookings are released automatically.[1] If that fails, you have three options.

  1. Go via Gokayama by the World Heritage Bus. Kaetsuno Bus runs it from Takaoka through Gokayama (五箇山) to Shirakawa-go. Each run has 16 reservable seats and the rest are unreserved, so you can board without a booking if there is space. Bookings open one month ahead and close the day before.[7] Check the operator’s notices for suspended runs before you plan around it.
  2. Join Hokuriku Railroad’s guided tour from Kanazawa, on weekends and holidays. It leaves West Gate platform 2 at 9:30, spends 50 min at Gokayama Ainokura and 3 hr 20 min at Shirakawa-go, and returns at approx. 17:20, for ¥8,000 per adult.[8] The comparison table above sets it against the bus.
  3. Make it a one-way trip. If you are moving on to Takayama anyway, ride Kanazawa → Shirakawa-go → Takayama and keep your luggage with you. You cannot break the journey on one ticket. You buy a ticket for each section when you change buses at Shirakawa-go.[1] The guide to stopping in Shirakawa-go with a suitcase pairs the buses and covers the lockers.

If you take the World Heritage Bus, the Gokayama guide covers the two villages on the way and the bus times there.

When can the plan go wrong?

Snow and traffic. Nohi Bus warns that buses can run two hours or more late because of queues for car parking at the village, heavy snowfall or expressway closures.[2] On busy autumn weekends and snowy days, do not take the last bus back if you have a train to catch the same evening.

Light-Up nights. The 2027 Light-Up Event is held on January 11, January 17, January 24 and January 31, 2027, and it is by advance reservation only.[6] On those days an entrance gate goes up at 15:30, and if you come by regular bus during the day, your bus must reach the village by 15:20.[6] That rules out the 14:00 bus from Kanazawa, which arrives at 15:25.[1],[4] Reservations for the event go through the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association’s event page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring a suitcase to Shirakawa-go?

Yes, but plan where it goes. On the bus you load it into the trunk yourself, and very long items are refused.[1] In the village, use the coin lockers at the bus terminal: ¥500 for a small or medium box, ¥1,000 for a large one.[5] They are available from 8:00 to 17:00.[5]

Can I add Takayama on the same day?

Only as a one-way trip that ends in Takayama, not as a return to Kanazawa. Take a morning bus to Shirakawa-go, then a separate ticket on to Takayama.[1] The Takayama leg, its fare and the last bus are in the Takayama guide linked above.

Do children pay half?

Yes, for rides through November 30, 2026: the child fare is ¥1,400 one way[1],[3] against ¥2,800 for an adult.[1],[2],[3] The child fare after the December 1, 2026 revision is not published yet.

What is the last bus back to Kanazawa?

The 17:30 from Shirakawa-go, which reaches Kanazawa Station at 18:45.[2],[4] Book it at the same time as your outbound seat, since it is reserved like every other bus on the line.[1]
