Stay by JR Hakodate Station (函館駅) if you have one night, an early train or a flight to catch: the morning market is a minute away[2] and the airport bus leaves from the station.[10] Stay in the Bay Area or Motomachi (元町) if the night view from Mt. Hakodate is the reason for your trip, so the walk back from the ropeway is short. Choose Yunokawa Onsen (湯の川温泉) for an onsen night, but count on 30 minutes by tram to the station.[5],[6] In winter, with heavy bags, the station side wins.
Key facts
- The pick for most first visits: the Hakodate Station area, with trains, the airport bus and the morning market on the doorstep.[2]
- For the night view: the Bay Area or Motomachi; the ropeway base station is a ten-minute walk from the Jujigai tram stop.[2]
- The onsen pick: Yunokawa, 5 minutes from the airport by car[5],[6] but 30 minutes by tram from the station.[5],[6]
- When Yunokawa is not worth it: one night with an early train from Hakodate Station.
- Lodging tax since April 1, 2026: from ¥200 per person per night (city and Hokkaido combined) for rooms under ¥20,000.[14],[15]
Which base fits my trip?
Start from your first and last move of the trip, then from your evening. The City of Hakodate lists hotels under the same four areas this table compares (the station, Mt. Hakodate and Motomachi, Goryokaku and Yunokawa), plus a catch-all “Other Area”.[1] All four are on the tram network,[3] which runs every 8 minutes in the daytime.[4]
| Item | Hakodate Station area | Bay Area and Motomachi | Goryokaku | Yunokawa Onsen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| To Hakodate Station | On the doorstep | Market to Jujigai: 7 minutes on foot and by tram | About 30 min by tram (to the tower) | 30 minutes by tram |
| To the ropeway | Shuttle bus, or tram to Jujigai and a ten-minute walk | Walk | Tram to Jujigai, then walk | Tram to Jujigai, then walk |
| To the airport | Direct airport bus | Via the station | Via the station | 5 minutes by car or bus |
| Evenings | Station streets | Harbor, warehouses, night view | Park and tower area | Onsen at your hotel |
| Luggage effort | Lowest | Slopes in Motomachi | Tram with bags | Tram with bags |
For a first visit of one or two nights, the station area is the safe default. The Hakodate Liner to the Shinkansen at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto leaves from here, about a 20-minute ride timed to the Shinkansen,[3] and the airport bus runs from here.[10] Pick the Bay Area if your evening is the night view; pick Yunokawa if your evening is the bath.
Hakodate Station area: best for one night or an early train?
Yes. Everything that starts or ends a Hakodate visit leaves from here: the Hakodate Liner for the Shinkansen[3] and the bus to Hakodate Airport.[10] If you are still deciding how to arrive, the Tokyo to Hakodate train or plane comparison sets the two side by side.
The Hakodate Morning Market is just a minute on foot from the station,[2] so a seafood breakfast fits before a morning train. On the last day, the coin lockers on the second floor of JR Hakodate Station are usable from 6:00am to 10:00pm,[7] which lets you check out early and still see the city.

For the night view, you do not need to move hotels. A shuttle bus from Hakodate Station stops at the ropeway base station,[3],[2] or you can ride the tram to Jujigai and walk about ten minutes.[2] Heading on to Sapporo afterwards? Hakodate to Sapporo by train, bus or plane compares the options.
The catch is atmosphere. The streets around the station are practical rather than pretty, and the old harbor is a tram ride away.
Bay Area and Motomachi: best for the night view?
Yes, if you can handle a slope with your bag. Motomachi sits at the foot of Mt. Hakodate, in front of the Bay Area, with hilly streets and cobblestone roads.[2] The ropeway base station is on the same hillside: the City of Hakodate suggests the tram to Jujigai and a ten-minute walk.[2] From a hotel nearby, you walk back down after the view instead of queueing for a tram.
That matters because the ropeway runs late. The last ride down is at 21:00 from October 1 to April 19 and at 22:00 from April 20 to September 30, and hours can change with the weather.[12] In 2026 the ropeway is closed for its legally required inspection from October 20 to November 8,[13] so check the dates before you book a Bay Area room for the view.

The Bay Area is the harbor side. The Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse is a 5-minute walk from the Jujigai tram stop, and the City of Hakodate gives the trip from the morning market to Jujigai as 7 minutes on foot and by tram.[4],[2] For an early train, allow for that tram ride with luggage.
The catch is the slopes. A hotel up in Motomachi means pulling a suitcase over cobblestones; one by the harbor keeps the walk flat. The Hakodate guide explains when to go up for the best view and how the queue builds at sunset.
Goryokaku: worth it as a base?
Only for a specific reason, such as a hotel you already like or evenings in that part of town. Goryokaku Tower gives about 30 minutes by tram from JR Hakodate Station to the tower,[11] so you are neither close to the trains nor close to the ropeway. The tram connects it to both,[3] and you would change nothing about your sightseeing.
For most visitors the star-shaped fort is a half-day visit from a station or Bay Area base, not a reason to sleep there.

Yunokawa Onsen: is the onsen night worth the tram ride?
Yes, for a second night or for an arrival by plane. Yunokawa Onsen has many hotels and inns, from ryokan (Japanese inns) to modern hotels.[4],[5] It is 5 minutes from Hakodate Airport by car or by the airport bus,[5],[6] so flying in late and soaking straight away works well.
The price is distance from everything else. Hakodate Station is 30 minutes away by tram,[5],[6] and the ropeway means the tram to Jujigai plus the walk up.[2] After the night view, the ropeway’s last ride down at 21:00 in the cold season[12] is followed by the long tram ride back.

If you have tattoos, the City of Hakodate suggests booking a room with its own open-air bath.[2] Read the onsen and tattoo rules before you choose a hotel with shared baths only.
Meals, check-in times and bath hours vary by inn. The ryokan guide explains what is usually included and what to ask when you book.
How many nights do I need?
Plan for 1 to 2 nights; stay at least one evening for the night view. One night by the station covers the night view, the morning market and a tram loop. With two nights, split them: a station or Bay Area night for the view, then a Yunokawa night for the onsen, ideally the night before a flight, since the airport is 5 minutes away.[5],[6]
Moving hotels within Hakodate is easy with a day in between: leave bags in the station lockers[7] and pick them up on the way to the next hotel.
What does the lodging tax add?
Since April 1, 2026, Hakodate City charges an accommodation tax, and it applies even if you booked before that date. Hokkaido’s own accommodation tax started in April 2026 as well.[14],[15] Both apply per person per night, at rates set by the room charge.
| Room charge per person per night | Hakodate City | City and Hokkaido combined |
|---|---|---|
| Under ¥20,000 | ¥100 | ¥200 |
| ¥20,000 to under ¥50,000 | ¥200 | ¥400 |
| ¥50,000 to under ¥100,000 | ¥500 | ¥1,000 |
| ¥100,000 or more | ¥2,000 | ¥2,500 |
Rates per the City of Hakodate.[14],[15] The hotel collects it together with your room charge and pays it on,[14],[15] so it may appear as a separate line at check-out.
At onsen hotels there is also a bathing tax. While the accommodation tax is in force, Hakodate City has cut it for general bathers from ¥150 to ¥100, and people under 15 remain exempt.[14]
What changes in winter?
Footing and luggage. The City of Hakodate notes that night temperatures fall below 0 degrees Celsius in the three winter months and calls thick coats and waterproof boots essential.[8] Rolling a suitcase over snow on Motomachi’s hilly streets[2] is hard work, so a station hotel or a flat Bay Area hotel is the easier choice. On Hachimanzaka slope, the sidewalk is heated.[9]
The tram keeps the four areas connected,[3] so a winter trip can still split nights between the station and Yunokawa. In December, the city’s winter page gives the Hakodate Christmas Fantasy in the Bay Area as running from December 1 to 25; if it is part of your plan, a Bay Area room puts you next to it, and the year’s schedule is worth checking before you book.[8]
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which area is best with kids and luggage?
Can I stay in Yunokawa with tattoos?
Yes. The City of Hakodate suggests a room with its own open-air bath for visitors with tattoos.[2] For the shared baths, ask the hotel before you book.
Can I walk to the ropeway from a Bay Area hotel?
Should I stay near Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station?
Not for a Hakodate visit. The Hakodate Liner reaches Hakodate Station in about 20 minutes and runs to match the Shinkansen,[3] so sleeping in town costs you little time.
