Yes, you can, and you should book ahead. Kanazawa’s teahouses traditionally do not take first-time guests without an introduction, so visitors see geiko (芸妓, Kanazawa’s word for geisha) through scheduled public programmes.[1] The city’s own option is the Kanazawa Geiko Experience, held on designated Saturdays from May 16, 2026 to March 20, 2027, except in July, August and over New Year.[1] On weekdays, look at Kanazawa Geigi no Mai or MEET the GEIKO instead.

The figures come from each listing: the Geiko Experience dates,[1] time[1] and teahouse districts;[1] Geigi no Mai’s dates,[2] time[2] and halls;[2] MEET the GEIKO’s schedule,[3] time[3] and seat prices;[3] and the Mi-Ne tour’s dates[4] and price.[4]
For a teahouse setting, the Saturday Geiko Experience is the one held inside a teahouse, in one of the three districts.[1] The City of Kanazawa created it so that visitors without an introduction can experience teahouse culture.[1]
For a weekday on a budget, Kanazawa Geigi no Mai is a stage show with commentary on teahouse culture, and you can take pictures with the geisha during the playtime.[2] You book by e-mail or through its website, and inquiries go to a secretariat in the Ishikawa Prefecture Culture Promotion Division.[2] Check which hall your date uses: the Noh Theater Annex until December, the Ongakudo Hogaku Hall from January.[2]
For English throughout, MEET the GEIKO at the Kanazawa Asanogawa Enyukai Hall is led entirely in English.[3] The Mi-Ne tour also comes with an English interpreter and shows you inside a working geiko house in the Nishi Chaya District.[4]
For the biggest stage, the Kanazawa Odori brings geiko from all three districts together once a year, in the fall. The 2026 edition ran from September 19 to September 20.[5] Check Visit Kanazawa for next year’s dates.
How do I book the Saturday Geiko Experience?
You book online, through the page linked from Visit Kanazawa’s listing.[1]
Pick a Saturday in the season
The programme runs only on designated Saturdays, and not in July, August or over New Year.[1] Check the event calendar on the listing for the dates actually scheduled.
Know the cancellation charges
Cancelling costs a refund charge of ¥300 per person up to 8 days before. From 7 to 2 days before, you also lose 30% of the fee; the day before, 50%; on the day, the full fee.[1]
What should I know before the day?
Wear socks. Bare feet are not allowed in the teahouse, and on a rainy day you should bring a spare pair to change into.[1]
The room is a tatami room on the teahouse’s second floor. There is no elevator, and the stairs may be steep.[1] If anyone in your group cannot manage stairs, Kanazawa Geigi no Mai in a public hall is the easier choice.[2]
For MEET the GEIKO, seats are pre-assigned and sold in advance, and tickets are non-refundable.[3] Doors open at 16:15, before the 16:30 start.[3]
Can I photograph geiko in the street?
Not without asking. Visit Kanazawa asks visitors not to photograph geisha they see on the street without consent, which may violate their portrait rights. It also asks you not to speak to them, as they may be on their way to an engagement.[6] For wider rules on behaviour in Japan, see the Japan etiquette guide.

The teahouse districts are worth a walk in their own right. For opening times, the Loop Bus and how Higashi Chaya fits a day in the city, see the Kanazawa guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a geisha show in English in Kanazawa?
Can I take photos during the show?
It depends on the programme. Kanazawa Geigi no Mai lets you take pictures with the geisha during the playtime.[2] For the other programmes, follow the staff’s instructions on the day.
What should I wear?
There is no dress code in the listings, but you must wear socks in the teahouse, as bare feet are not permitted.[1]
