Takachiho (高千穂) is a town in Miyazaki Prefecture, best known for a river gorge with columnar cliffs and a waterfall you can see from a rental boat. The Takachiho Tourism Association explains that the gorge formed when pyroclastic flows from Aso’s volcanic activity cooled into columns of rock along the Gokase River.[1] Go if you are crossing Kyushu between Kumamoto, Aso and the Miyazaki coast, and can stay one night for the evening kagura dance. Skip it if you have no car and only a short base in Fukuoka: the buses are few and the ride is long.

Key facts

  • Worth it for: repeat visitors crossing Kyushu who want a gorge, a boat on the river and the evening kagura in one stop.
  • Time needed: half a day for the gorge, plus one evening for the kagura, so plan an overnight stay (our planning suggestion).
  • Boat fee: from ¥4,100 per rental, depending on the date.[3]
  • Boat booking: online only, from 2 weeks to 2 days before you ride.[3],[2]
  • Getting there: by bus or car; the Takachiho-go bus from Kumamoto takes about 3 hours.[8],[6]
  • Last bus to Kumamoto: timed at Takachiho Bus Center at 16:57.[7],[8]
  • Luggage: ¥500 per item at the tourist information center by the bus center, until 17:00.[9]

What is there to see?

Takachiho Gorge — walk or boat?

Do both if you can. A walking path of about 1 km follows the gorge, so you can see the cliffs and the falls from above for free.[2] Part of the path is currently closed for construction, and walkers are sent along the road instead, so watch for traffic on that stretch.[12] The view most visitors come for is Manai Falls (真名井の滝), which drops about 17 m into the river and is listed among Japan’s top 100 waterfalls.[2]

From the water, you see the falls from below. The rental boats are run by the Takachiho Tourism Association. A rental lasts 30 minutes, and one boat takes up to 3 people, or 4 when preschool children are included.[3] The boats operate 8:30–17:00, with last reception at 16:30, or earlier when there is a queue.[3]

Booking is the hard part. Reservations are made online only, from 2 weeks before the boarding date (9:00) until 2 days before (9:00); the association does not take phone bookings.[3],[2] Same-day tickets go on sale at the boat reception on the morning itself, but Saturdays, Sundays and holidays in October, every day in November, and in December the Saturdays, Sundays and holidays plus the 28th to the 31st are reservation-only, with no same-day sales once the boats are sold out.[3]

Can I see night kagura?

Yes, every night except two. Takachiho Kagura (高千穂神楽) is a sacred dance performed at 20:00 for one hour in the Kagura Hall of Takachiho Shrine (高千穂神社), with no show on December 31 and January 1.[4]

Tickets cost ¥1,000 per person. Online reservations open 30 days before at 10:00 and close at 17:00 on the day, and same-day reception at the Kagura Hall starts at 19:30.[4] On November 22 and 23 the town holds the Takachiho Night Kagura Festival instead, and the regular performance is not held.[4]

Amano Iwato Shrine — is it worth the extra trip?

Go if the myths interest you. Amano Iwato Shrine (天岩戸神社) worships the cave called Amano Iwato, where the sun goddess Amaterasu is said to have hidden, as its sacred body.[5] It is outside the walkable center: the tourism association gives 15 minutes by car from Takachiho Bus Center.[11]

The walking path is free. The rental boats are the main cost: the association’s fee calendar lists ¥4,100 on some dates and ¥5,100 on others, so check the date you book.[3] The boats run 8:30–17:00.[3] The nightly kagura costs ¥1,000 per person.[4]

Two kinds of closure catch visitors. The boats do not run when the river is high, and January, April, July and October are safety-inspection months with some full-day closures.[3]

What happens to my boat booking if the river is high?

It depends on who cancels and when. Under the booking terms, as a rule the boats run in the rain as long as the river is not high. Cancelling is free until 9:00 two days before your boarding day; after that, including a last-minute cancellation of your own because of rain, the charge is 100%. When the boats are suspended because of a disaster or an inspection, you are told by email and the operator handles the refund.[13] So do not cancel on a rainy forecast alone: wait for the association’s decision, and walk the path instead if the boats stay closed.

How do I get there?

You arrive by bus or car. From Kumamoto, the Takachiho-go express runs towards Nobeoka, with Sanko Bus and Miyazaki Kotsu runs on its timetable. Seats are reserved and assigned, though some sections cannot be booked and you ride them only if a seat is free. The tourism association gives about 3 hours from Kumamoto Station.[8],[6] Reserve your seat with the operator before you travel.

From Aso Station, the tourism association lists the Asochiho-go bus. From Fukuoka Airport, the Gokase-go highway bus takes about 3 hours 30 minutes, with 4 buses a day and reservations required.[6] If you are travelling down from Honshu, the Japan Rail Pass review covers whether a pass pays off for the Shinkansen leg to Kumamoto.

  1. Check the timetableBefore you book

Look up the current Takachiho-go or Asochiho-go timetable on the operator’s site before you book.

  2. Reserve your seat

Call the reservation center listed for the route, or book where the page allows it.

  3. Get off at Takachiho Bus Center

Leave large bags at the tourist information center, a minute’s walk away, before you head out.[9]

When is the last bus back to Kumamoto?

Plan on the 16:57 departure. Miyazaki Kotsu’s timetables, both the current one and the one revised from November 1, 2026, mark its own Takachiho-go runs (7:30 from Nobeoka and 15:31 from Kumamoto Station) as suspended for the time being.[7],[8] That leaves the Sanko Bus run in each direction. It leaves Kumamoto Station at 9:11 and is timed at Takachiho Bus Center at 12:34; towards Kumamoto it is timed at Takachiho Bus Center at 16:57 and reaches Kumamoto Station at 19:58.[7],[8]

The timetable marks a rest stop at Takachiho Bus Center, so be at the stop before the listed time, not after it. If you miss that bus, there is no later Takachiho-go that day: stay the night and see the kagura.

Where can I leave my luggage?

At the tourist information center run by the Takachiho Tourism Association, 1 minute’s walk from Takachiho Bus Center. It keeps bags for ¥500 per item from 8:30 to 17:00, and you can drop them off on the day without booking.[9] Collect them before 17:00; the last bus to Kumamoto is timed at the bus center at 16:57, so the timing works if you head back by bus.[7],[8]

How do I get between the gorge, the shrine and Amano Iwato?

Walk to the first two, ride to the third. The tourism association lists Takachiho Gorge, Takachiho Shrine, Kushifuru Shrine, Aratate Shrine and Takachiho Station as within a 30-minute walk of Takachiho Bus Center; for other places you need transport.[10] Amano Iwato Shrine is 15 minutes by car from the bus center.[11]

Do not count on local buses for this. The association notes that buses within the town are few and go to limited places, and suggests a taxi or a rental bicycle instead.[10] A practical order without a car: walk to the gorge in the morning, walk back past Takachiho Shrine, and take a taxi to Amano Iwato if you have time left before the evening kagura.

Where do I park at the gorge on busy days?

Expect traffic in the tourist season. In the tourist season, traffic jams can form around Takachiho Gorge, Takachiho Shrine and Amano Iwato Shrine, and when the car parks at the gorge and at Amano Iwato are full, staff direct drivers to temporary car parks.[10]

On the busiest days, you park at a temporary car park and ride a shuttle bus around the gorge. In 2026 it runs on set days, including October 10, 11, 12 and 31 and November 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22 and 23, from 8:30 to 17:00 about every 20 to 30 minutes. The fare is ¥300 from junior high school age, and it is cash only.[12] On those days, arrive early and keep cash ready.

By car, the gorge is easier to fit into a Kyushu loop with Aso. The guide to driving in Japan covers the licence translation, rental and tolls.

Where should I stay?

Stay the night in Takachiho if you want to see the kagura. The performance starts at 20:00 and lasts an hour, so you need to be in town that evening.[4] An overnight stay also lets you take the boats in the morning without rushing for a bus. If you want a Japanese inn, the ryokan guide explains how meals, baths and check-in work.

To choose between the town center, Iwato, Gokase and Nobeoka, where to stay in Takachiho compares the areas.

Tips

If the boats are sold out, the walking path still gives you the view of Manai Falls from above.
