Stay one night in Mitai (三田井), the town center around Takachiho Bus Center. It is where most of Takachiho’s beds are, Takachiho Shrine and its 20:00 kagura are a walk away, and the gorge is close enough for the first boats. A day trip from Kumamoto works only if you skip the kagura: the last bus back is at 16:57. Choose Iwato (岩戸) for Amano Iwato Shrine at dawn, Gokase (五ヶ瀬) for an onsen night, and Nobeoka (延岡) only if you arrive or leave by JR.
Key facts
- The pick: Mitai, the town center. Takachiho Shrine is a 15-minute walk from the bus center.[3]
- Why stay at all: the kagura runs every night from 20:00 to 21:00, except December 31, January 1 and November 22–23 (festival days).[7]
- Day trip from Kumamoto: the bus is timed in Takachiho at 12:34 and leaves at 16:57.[12],[13]
- Choice: 35 places on the tourism association’s list, 25 of them in Mitai.[1]
- Boats: guests booked through the inn association’s own site can reserve from 30 days before.[11],[10]
- Onsen: none in Takachiho itself;[2] the nearest onsen inn on the list is in Gokase.[1]
Which area of Takachiho fits my trip?
The Takachiho Tourism Association sorts lodging into seven areas: Mitai, Ueno, Iwato, Mukaiyama, Oshikata, the neighboring town of Gokase, and Nobeoka City.[1] Its categories cover hotels, ryokan, minshuku (family-run inns), business hotels, pensions, guesthouses and campsites.[1] What separates the areas is what you can reach on foot after dark.

Should I stay in Takachiho or base in Kumamoto?
Stay in Takachiho if you want the kagura. The performance ends at 21:00,[7] long after the last bus has gone. The Takachiho-go from Kumamoto takes about 3 hours, and seats must be reserved.[8],[13] The timetable revised from November 1, 2026 marks two of its runs as suspended for now,[13] which leaves one bus each way. It leaves Kumamoto Station at 9:11 and is timed at Takachiho Bus Center at 12:34; the return is timed there at 16:57 and reaches Kumamoto at 19:58.[12],[13]
That gives you an afternoon in town: enough for the gorge and Takachiho Shrine, both within a 30-minute walk of the bus center,[2] but not for the kagura, Amano Iwato or the sea of clouds at dawn. A night in Takachiho also frees the next morning for the boats, which open at 8:30.[10]
An Aso base works best with a car. The association gives about 1 hour 30 minutes from Kurokawa Onsen and about 2 hours from Kumamoto Airport by road.[8] The Takachiho guide has the bus routes from Kumamoto, Aso and Fukuoka in full.
Mitai, the town center: why most visitors should stay here
Mitai is the right base for most visitors, and the only one that works well without a car. It holds 25 of the 35 places on the association’s list,[1] so it has the widest choice of types and prices. The bus center, the shrine and the gorge are all within a 30-minute walk.[2]
The evening is the reason to stay here. Takachiho Shrine is 15 minutes on foot from the bus center,[3] and the kagura in its Kagura Hall runs from 20:00 to 21:00 every night except December 31, January 1 and November 22–23, when the yearly kagura festival replaces it.[7] Tickets cost ¥1,000; online booking opens 30 days ahead at 10:00, and same-day tickets go on sale at the hall from 19:30.[7]
The catch is the slope to the gorge. The gorge is about 2 km from the bus center: downhill on the way there, uphill on the way back.[2] Budget a taxi or a rental bicycle for the return, or choose a place on the gorge side of town. If you book a ryokan or minshuku with dinner, the ryokan guide explains meal times, baths and check-in.
Near the gorge and Kunimigaoka: is it worth staying out of the center?
Only if you drive. No area on the list is named after the gorge. A campsite in Mitai and a minshuku in Oshikata (押方) each give 5 minutes by car to the gorge, and one B&B sits midway between the gorge and the shrine.[1] On foot, the town center is already within a 30-minute walk of the gorge.[2]

The stronger reason to sleep out here is Kunimigaoka (国見ヶ丘), the hilltop in Oshikata 15 minutes by car from the bus center. It usually has a sea of clouds from late September to early December, on clear, windless mornings when conditions come together.[6] That means being on the hill at dawn, which needs a car or a taxi from any base. For the licence translation and rental, see the guide to driving in Japan.
Iwato: should I sleep next to Amano Iwato Shrine?
Yes, if the shrine is the main reason for your trip. Amano Iwato Shrine is 15 minutes by car from the bus center, or about 8 km and 40 minutes by rental bicycle.[4],[2] Iwato has 4 places on the list.[1] One guesthouse is a 5-minute walk from the shrine, and a minshuku nearby recommends going first thing in the morning, when there are few people.[1]

Iwato also has the town’s public bath, Amano Iwato no Yu. It is open 10:00–22:00, closes on Wednesdays (the next weekday instead when Wednesday is a public holiday), and charges ¥500 from junior high school age for visitors from outside the town.[5] The association notes that it is a bath, not an onsen.[2]
The catch is the kagura. Takachiho Shrine is back in Mitai, so an evening at the kagura means a drive or a taxi each way.
Gokase: can I stay at an onsen near Takachiho?
Yes, but not in Takachiho itself. The association states that the town has no onsen inns.[2] Its list includes one inn in the neighboring town of Gokase, which describes itself as the only natural onsen inn in the north of Miyazaki Prefecture.[1]
Gokase is outside Takachiho town,[1] so treat it as a base for drivers, and plan the kagura evening around the drive back. For bathing manners and tattoo policies, see the onsen etiquette guide.
Nobeoka: a base on the railway
Nobeoka is on the JR line. The association gives about 1 hour from Miyazaki Station to Nobeoka by JR limited express, then about 1 hour 30 minutes by route bus to Takachiho.[8] The Takachiho-go also runs through: the bus from Kumamoto reaches Nobeoka Station at 13:29, and the bus towards Kumamoto leaves Nobeoka at 15:45.[12],[13]
Choose Nobeoka if you arrive late by train, or if your trip continues down the Miyazaki coast. The association’s list includes one Nobeoka hotel.[1] It is a poor base for the kagura: the performance ends at 21:00,[7] and the ride back is long.
Does where I book change my chance of a boat?
It can. Guests who book their room through the Takachiho Ryokan Association’s own booking site can reserve the gorge boats from 30 days before the stay. The general online sale opens only 2 weeks before. Slots are limited, and rooms booked through travel sites or an inn’s own website do not qualify.[11],[10]
If the boat matters more than the room, check that your inn takes part before you book. The boat reception is in the No. 1 Oshioi car park at the gorge.[10]
How to decide
Four questions that settle it
- Do you want the kagura at 20:00? Stay in Mitai.[7]
- Are you coming for Amano Iwato or the sea of clouds at dawn? Stay in Iwato or near Kunimigaoka, and drive.[6]
- Are you arriving or leaving by JR, without the kagura? Nobeoka works.[8]
- Do you want the boats? Book the room early enough to use the inn association’s 30-day window.[11],[10]
Visiting between mid-November and early February adds a reason to stay: the traditional village night kagura runs in that season, mainly at weekends. The association notes that the venues are not places to sleep and recommends arranging lodging.[2]
