Yes, if you have half a day in San’in. The Tottori Sand Dunes (鳥取砂丘) are a field of sand on the Sea of Japan about 16 km long, free to enter at any hour.[1][7],[6] Go for the climb up the 47 m Uma-no-se ridge and the sea view from the top.[2] Add the Sand Museum next door if its exhibition is on. Skip it if you only want a quick photo stop and have no time for the bus ride from Tottori Station.

Key facts

  • Worth it for: travellers who like big open landscapes and a short, steep climb with a sea view; repeat visitors exploring San’in.[2]
  • Time needed: Tottori City’s own model courses take 90 minutes or 3 hours.[2]
  • Fee: none. The dunes have no gate and are open 24 hours.[7],[6]
  • Sand Museum: current exhibition open every day until January 3, 2027; the next one opens on April 23, 2027.[12][14]
  • Getting there: bus 39 from Tottori Station, 12 a day, ¥380, 22 minutes; IC cards accepted.[16],[17][18],[17],[16][19],[5]

What is there to see and do at the dunes?

The main sight is Uma-no-se (馬の背, the Horse’s Back), a sand ridge 47 m high. You climb its steep slope, and the Sea of Japan opens out in front of you at the top.[2] Walking there and back over the soft sand is the visit for most people.

The dunes stretch about 16 km along the coast, from Hakuto Beach to Iwado Beach, and about 2 km inland.[1]

Start at the Tottori Sand Dunes Visitor Center (鳥取砂丘ビジターセンター). It is open every day from 9:00 to 17:00 and costs nothing to enter.[8],[7]

Beyond walking, the Visitor Center lists sandboarding, yoga on the dunes, fat bikes, paragliding, Segway rides, camel riding and sand sculpting.[9] Camel rides run from 10:00 to 16:00 and take no reservations. They are a short circle around the platform, not a ride across the dunes, because camels may not enter Uma-no-se. Rain, thunder or snow can stop them.[10]

The other way in is from above. A chairlift runs from the Sakyu Center Miharashi-no-Oka hill down to the dunes entrance in about 5 minutes. Adults pay ¥500 return or ¥300 one way.[4]

The Sand Museum — what is on, and when?

The Sand Museum (砂の美術館) is an indoor museum of sand sculptures.[12],[13] Its 17th exhibition, Sand Travel World Spain, runs from April 24, 2026 to January 3, 2027. It has no closing days in that period, New Year holidays included.[12]

The 18th exhibition, Sand Travel World Silk Road, is planned from April 23, 2027 to January 3, 2028.[14] If you travel between those two exhibitions, plan the dunes alone.

The museum opens from 9:00 to 18:00, and the last entry is 17:30.[12],[13]

The dunes themselves cost nothing. There is no gate, no ticket and no closing time: you can walk on the sand at any hour.[7],[6] The Visitor Center is also free, from 9:00 to 17:00 every day.[8],[7]

At the Sand Museum, adults pay ¥800. Elementary, junior high and high school students pay ¥400, and younger children enter free.[12] If you drive, the Tottori Sand Dunes Parking Lot in front of the Visitor Center charges ¥500 a day for a car. It has no gate, so you can come and go at night too.[7],[6]

How do I get there from Tottori Station?

Take route bus 39 from the Tottori Station bus terminal to Sakyu Kaikan (砂丘会館), the stop for the dunes. Hinomaru Jidosha’s timetable from April 1, 2026 lists 12 buses a day, every day. They leave Tottori Station at 9:10, 9:40, 10:50, 11:30, 12:30, 13:00, 14:10, 14:40, 15:50, 16:20, 17:30 and 18:00, and the ride takes 22 minutes.[16],[17] The adult fare is ¥380, half for children.[18],[17],[16]

Buses back leave Sakyu Kaikan at 9:40, 10:10, 11:20, 12:00, 13:00, 13:30, 14:40, 15:10, 16:20, 16:50, 18:00 and 18:30. The last one reaches Tottori Station at 18:52.[16]

You can pay with an IC card. Since March 21, 2026, all Hinomaru and Nihon Kotsu route buses in the prefecture accept ICOCA and the other nationwide cards, including Suica and PASMO. Tap the reader when you board and again when you get off; cash still works.[19],[5]

On weekends there is a second option. The Loop Kirinjishi (ループ麒麟獅子) sightseeing bus runs on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays (not January 1), on substitute holidays and on August 13–15. It reaches the dunes about 20 minutes after leaving Tottori Station, and a full loop takes about 75 minutes.[5],[15],[19]

A taxi takes about 20 min from Tottori Station, and also about 20 min from Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport (鳥取砂丘コナン空港).[15] If you fly in, the airport bus to Tottori Station also takes IC cards.[19],[5]

Can I do it as a day trip from Osaka or Matsue?

Yes, from both, with a morning train and the bus. The Sand Museum gives approx. 2 hr 40 min from Osaka Station to Tottori by limited express, and approx. 2 hr from Okayama.[15] On the timetable for October 23, 2026, Super Hakuto trains reach Tottori at 10:12 and 11:58. The last Super Hakuto back leaves Tottori at 18:40.[20],[21]

From the 10:12 arrival, the 10:50 bus puts you at the dunes before midday.[16],[17] The 18:00 bus back reaches Tottori Station at 18:22, in time for that last train.[16] Train times are for that date; check your own. If you are weighing a JR West pass for this trip from Osaka, the Kansai WIDE Area Pass review shows when it pays off.

From Matsue (松江), the Super Matsukaze runs along the San’in Line. On the same date, one calls at Matsue at 09:25, leaves Yonago at 09:52 and reaches Tottori at 10:57. Going back west, Super Matsukaze trains leave Tottori at 15:14 and 17:44 and reach Matsue at 16:44 and 19:16.[22],[23] To compare JR West passes for this line, see the San’in rail pass comparison for Matsue and Izumo.

If Tottori is one stop on a longer San’in trip, the Matsue and Izumo guide covers the next two days west.

When should I go?

Any month works, but summer and winter change the visit. Tottori City warns that heatstroke is a risk on the dunes on any day warmer than 20 degrees, not only in summer. There is no shade at all, and the sand can get hot enough to burn bare feet, so wear socks and shoes. In summer the city suggests the morning or the evening, when you may see the sun set into the Sea of Japan.[3]

In winter, snow can cover the dunes overnight. Every year the Tottori Sand Dunes Illusion, a special winter feature, runs for about 10 days.[11]

Because the dunes never close, early morning and evening walks are possible all year.[7],[6] Buses, however, run only from the morning until the evening.[16]

For another half-day in the region, the Adachi Museum of Art guide covers the garden museum near Yonago.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special shoes for the dunes?

No, ordinary shoes work, though sand gets in. On hot days wear socks and shoes rather than sandals: Tottori City warns that the sand can burn bare feet.[3]

Is there an entrance fee for the Tottori Sand Dunes?

No. The dunes have no gate and are open 24 hours. Only the Sand Museum and the chairlift charge.[7],[6][12][4]

Can I visit in a wheelchair?

Partly. The Visitor Center lends wheelchairs free, including special ones that can move on the sand, but they cannot be reserved. A standard wheelchair can reach the panoramic terrace by a wooden slope from the parking lot.[7]

Can I use Suica or ICOCA on the bus to the dunes?

Yes. Since March 21, 2026, the route buses and the Loop Kirinjishi accept the nationwide IC cards, including Suica.[19],[5]

Can I ride a camel across the dunes?

No. Camel rides are a short circle around the platform, and camels may not enter Uma-no-se.[10]
