Stay in Shibu Onsen (渋温泉) if you can. Its guests get a key to nine public baths at no charge, and the bus to the park stops in the village. Yudanaka (湯田中), the railway station for the area, is the easier base if you arrive late by train. Kanbayashi Onsen (上林温泉) puts you at the start of the forest walk, and Nagano city works for a day trip, especially in winter, when a direct express runs.
Key facts
- The pick: Shibu Onsen. Overnight guests borrow a key from their ryokan and bathe in the nine public baths for free.[2],[4]
- Easiest by train: Yudanaka, 38 minutes from Nagano by limited express.[1]
- Bus to the park: from Yudanaka at 9:18, 10:48, 11:53, 13:33, 15:58 and 18:43.[7]
- Last bus back: 18:55 from Snow Monkey Park, at Yudanaka at 19:09.[7]
- Day trip from Nagano: from December 5, 2026 to April 5, 2027, a direct express runs every 20 to 30 minutes.[8],[9]
- The walk: about 2 km and 30 minutes from Kanbayashi Onsen.[1]
Which base fits my trip?
All four bases end with the same walk. The Yudo promenade from Kanbayashi Onsen to Jigokudani is about 2 km and takes about 30 minutes; it is mostly flat, with some slopes.[1] What differs is how you reach the start, when the last bus leaves, and where you soak afterwards.

Shibu Onsen: is the nine-bath key worth it?
Yes, if you want an onsen night as well as the monkeys. Shibu has nine public baths that residents use every day, and Shibu Onsen’s own website reserves the full set of nine for guests who stay overnight in the village; day visitors can use only Oyu (see the FAQ).[2] [3],[2] Your ryokan lends you the key; the baths are free and open 6:00–22:00, though a bath may be closed at times, for example for cleaning.[2],[4] The same website lists 29 inns.[5]

Know what to expect. The baths have a changing room and the tub, nothing else: no showers, no shampoo or soap, and no boxes for valuables.[4] The water comes straight from the source and can be too hot to enter until you add cold water.[2],[4] For bathing manners and tattoo questions in general, see the onsen etiquette guide.
The park lies about 2.5 km up the Yokoyu River from the village.[6] Buses toward the park pass the Shibu Onsen stop at 9:22, 10:52, 11:57, 13:37, 16:02 and 18:47.[7] The last bus back, at 18:55 from the park, reaches Shibu at 18:59.[7]
Driving does not shorten it in winter. The narrow forest road from Shibu to the paid Jigokudani car park closes for the season.[1] If you book a ryokan with dinner, the ryokan guide explains meal times, yukata and check-in.
Yudanaka Onsen: who should stay there?
Stay in Yudanaka if you arrive by train and want the shortest transfer from the platform to your room. The Nagano Electric Railway limited express takes 38 minutes from Nagano, and the operator of the park counts 15 minutes by bus from Yudanaka to the Snow Monkey Park stop, then a 35-minute walk.[1]

The Japan Tourism Agency describes Yudanaka as a lively onsen town with many ryokan and restaurants, and many of those ryokan open their baths to outside visitors in the afternoon.[14] Right in front of the station, Kaede no Yu is open 10:00–21:00 (last entry 20:30), with a foot bath until 22:30. It closes on the first Tuesday of the month and costs ¥500 from junior high school age.[12],[14]
The catch is the bus. On the Kanbayashi line timetable revised October 1, 2026, buses leave Yudanaka Station for the park at 9:18, 10:48, 11:53, 13:33, 15:58 and 18:43, every day.[7] The gaps between buses are long, so plan your morning around them.
Kanbayashi Onsen: closest to the monkeys?
Kanbayashi Onsen is where the walk begins. The Yudo promenade runs from here to Jigokudani, about 2 km and about 30 minutes on foot.[1] The park’s own free car park is also in Kanbayashi Onsen, a 35-minute walk from the park.[1]
It suits drivers and anyone who wants to start before the first bus arrives at 9:28.[7] The trade-off is the evening: unlike Shibu guests, you have no village of public baths to walk to.
The Snow Monkey Park bus stop, where the walk to the park begins, has a waiting room with tourist information, toilets and coin lockers, open 9:30–16:30 every day.[13] Whatever your base, plan for rough ground. The park’s operator says every route has unpaved sections, steps and slopes, and that wheelchairs and carts cannot be used.[1]
Nagano city: is a day trip enough?
Yes, in winter. From December 5, 2026 to April 5, 2027, Nagaden Bus runs the Ex24 express directly between Nagano Station East Exit and Snow Monkey Park every 20 to 30 minutes.[8],[9] The first bus leaves at 8:00 and arrives at 8:50; the last one out leaves at 13:30. Buses back run from 11:00 to 17:00, and the 17:00 reaches Nagano at 17:55.[9] The fare is ¥3,000.[9]
Seats are limited. You queue at stop 24, and when a bus is full you wait for the next. Nagaden Bus recommends buying the bus-and-admission set ticket online: the same-day counter may stop selling once web sales reach their limit, and you cannot pay on board.[8]
Before December 5, the summer timetable of the Shiga Kogen express applies; it includes a Snow Monkey Park stop.[11] The other way in is the train to Yudanaka and the Kanbayashi line bus.[1]
Choose Nagano if you are on a Shinkansen route and want one hotel for several days. The cost is time and the evening: no onsen village, and a fixed last bus. For the Shinkansen from Tokyo, see the Tokyo to Kanazawa Shinkansen guide.
Whichever base you pick, the Snow Monkey Park guide has the fee, the hours and what to expect at the pools.
